Biography

1.Your legal name? How did you get your nickname?

Brian Ponder. I utilized my real name “Brian J”, but Suga Free and I have a running joke, so we always come up with different words for “J”. Like, he’ll call me random names like “Brian Justice” or “Brian Jumpin’ Jacks”.

2.Where are you from?

I grew up on the south side of Pomona, California, and spent a lot of time going back and forth from Pomona to Compton.

3.What are some of your childhood music experiences?

I was blessed to meet Michael Jackson. My Aunt was part of a church group that took a trip to Michael Jackson’s Ranch.

4.What led you into a career in Music?

I started writing with and managing my cousin. We took some of my poems and made them into songs. Then my business partner, Ray, was like, “You need to do this full time, but focus on yourself.”, and it’s been a wrap ever since.

5.What artist do you currently listen to and why?

I listen to all genres of music. When you have an open mind you can find inspiration from anybody. It helps you find gems like Benee, Koffee, Michael Franks, and of course Murray.

6.Who are your biggest influences/inspirations in music today or before?

Suga Free has been one of my greatest influences and inspirations of today. I remember as a youngin my homie had the anti-skip CD player when I heard “Street Gospel” for the first time and I was like, “Yo, he’s from my city.” Now he has taken me under his wing and I’ve learned so much from him. Being under that DJ Quik umbrella, I sat back and soaked in the game.

7. What do you consider your style of music?

I’m a huge fan of the 90s and early 2000s, so you can hear that vibe in my sound, but I’m versatile and a student of music.

8. What is your most recent release?

“Roll Call” with the legends Suga Free, Jayo Felony, and Pomona Pimpin Young

9. Other than music what are some of your other passions?

Creating is my therapy – whether it be music, art, videography, or graphic design. I am also nice with basketball.

10. What do you consider your greatest accomplishments in music so far?

Being part of a great team of talent – management, production, and business partners – allows me to focus on the music and my craft. Within the first year of going hard on my craft, I was signed to my hometown hero, the legend, Suga Free.

11. Who are some artists you think you sound like if any?

I haven’t received any comparisons as of yet. I feel like I have a distinct sound and approach to music.

12. Where do you see yourself musically in 3 years?

I see myself continuing to be a student of the game. Perfecting my sound, enjoying the process, putting it out into the atmosphere, and winning a Grammy or two.

13. What are your goals for this year, and going into 2022?

Going into the midway point of the year, my goal is to drop my debut album “Pomona Virus”, and continue to learn and develop my craft.

14. At what age did you record your first record?

I was a writer first, so my first time on a record was when I was about 22 years old.

15. What do you have coming up next?

As of right now, we are in the process of dropping my debut album with features from Suga Free, Jayo Felony, Glasses Malone, Yukmouth, Stupid Young, and Prohoezak.
